Did you know that there are several celebrities who are or who previously dealt with Lupus? In fact, many of them are battling the condition in the public eye in a bid to draw attention to this terrible disease. Here are 7 names you may recognize from both past and present who have or had Lupus.

Selena Gomez

In 2015, Disney Channel star, turned singer, Selena Gomez cancelled several her concerts. At the time, it said that she was suffering from severe exhaustion. A few weeks later, Selena announced that she was suffering from a particularly severe form of Lupus.

Selena Gomez stated that the condition left her on the brink of a stroke. She said that her tours were cancelled as she needed to go through a bout of chemotherapy, which is what left her exhausted.

To this day, Selena regularly talks about the condition in public and is a patron for several different charities looking to understand the way in which Lupus works.

In September of 2016, Selena Gomez had to cancel her World Tour due to panic attacks and depression which occurred as side effects of her Lupus.  She is now taking time to refocus on her health and happiness.

Nick Cannon

Nick Cannon, a musician, film producer, and a whole lot more, announced that he almost died because of his Lupus. A few years ago, he came close to suffering from kidney failure because of the condition. This is, of course, something which is very rare.

Nick Cannon now insists that he is 100% healthy and suffering no Lupus-like symptoms. However, just like every Lupus sufferer out there, he keeps regular tabs on his symptoms to ensure that they do not get to where they were in the past.

Nick Cannon, keeps a very busy and active schedule. As mentioned previously, he performs a large variety of jobs. Nick credits his ability to juggle so much to his diet regimen and a leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

Michael Jackson

While Michael Jackson is sadly, no longer with us, he was diagnosed with Lupus in 1986. It would be next to impossible to state his achievements. He will go down as one of the greatest musicians in history.

What many people are unaware of is the fact that Michael Jackson’s ‘famed’ look is actually tied to his Lupus symptoms. In his later years, it would be common to see Michael walking around wearing hats, masks and sunglasses. This is down to the fact that his body became very sensitive to the UV rays from the sun, something which many Lupus sufferers have to deal with on a regular basis.

Toni Braxton

Toni Braxton is regarded as one of the greatest singers of all time. One of the interesting things about her battle with Lupus is that, unlike some of the other celebrities on this list, she deals with everything in full public view. Lupus sufferers may wish to watch the reality show ‘Braxton Family Values’, where Toni regularly deals with the symptoms and treatments related to her lupus. It is an incredibly eye-opening show and showcases the battle that Lupus sufferers go through on an almost daily basis. The show portrays no one is immune to the condition, no matter how successful you are in life. Toni has also been hospitalized multiple times recently and has had to postpone concert dates as a result.


Seal is another musician who has battled Lupus. Seal is often recognized by prominent scars on both his face and his scalp. This is because he suffers from an incredibly rare form of Lupus. This condition resulted in the scars forming. While Seal does not talk about his Lupus all that much nowadays in interviews, he has covered it extensively in the past. In fact, he was one of the first celebrities to start drawing attention to the condition.

Flannery O’Connor

Flannery O’Connor was a famous writer who also suffered from Lupus. She died in 1964 at the age of 39. However, in her short life, she was the author of several popular books including ‘Wise Blood’, ‘A Circle in the Fire’ and ‘The Displaced Person’.  Flannery is included on this list because because her condition was so severe that she died from Lupus related symptoms. Back in the 1960s not much was known about the condition. This meant people were dying younger with no way in which to treat it. Fortunately, people are now living longer, fuller lives with the condition as the disease has become more commonly diagnosed.

Sophie Howard

While she may not be the most famous supermodel in the world, she holds a great deal of fame in the UK, often appearing in the FHM magazine. She was diagnosed with Lupus when she was a teen. While she has not spoken much publicly about her condition, other than to highlight the fact that she is suffering from it, it is clear that her Lupus has not held her back in achieving the career that she had strived for all of her life.
